Scribe Augmented Reality (ScribeAR) Project
Biography & Research Abstract
Currently, deaf and hard of hearing students have an inequitable atmosphere due to real time captioning services in lagging, delays, and more. This as a result, affects students performance and cognitive load, which can impact the environment a student is in. ScribeAR aims to curb this issue by integrating real time captioning with augmented reality headsets, utilizing current services such as Webspeech, Microsoft Azure, and Streamtext.
Garima Sharma is a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign majoring in Computer Science and Advertising with interests in the intersection of technology and society. This summer, Garima worked with Professor Angrave and the ScribeAR team on the integration of augmented reality in real time captioning for the deaf and hard of hearing community. In addition, Garima works with the I-STEM Education Initiative at UIUC towards developing materials on STEM education resources throughout Illinois. She is also a member of student run organizations such as HackIllinois' and Reflections | Projections and a mentor for underclassmen in ACM and WCS.
