The US News & World Report college rankings are the ultimate peer reviews. The rankings methodology “were based solely on the results of surveys sent to academic officials in fall 2022 and early 2023 in chemistry, computer science, earth science, mathematics, and physics." The peers of the Illinois Computer Science Department think very highly of it. Four computer science specialty graduate program areas were surveyed, and Illinois Computer Science rose to Top 5 status or better in every category: Artificial Intelligence (#5), Programming Languages (#3), Systems (#4), and Theory (#5).

“The research breakthroughs of our faculty and students are the reason for our improvement in this latest round of rankings–I’m thrilled to see our excellence recognized on the national stage. This is a huge source of pride for our department and shows the breadth and depth of our contributions to the field of computer science.” –Nancy M. Amato, Bliss Professor and Department Head
